Pure Feathered Poultry offers one of the most striking and beloved heritage breeds: the Welsummer chicken. These Dutch chickens have a rich history. First developed in the early 1900s in the village of Welsum, Holland, and introduced to the U.S. in 1928, the Welsummer chicken has since gained a reputation for its unique eggs and friendly demeanor.
Welsummer chickens are known for their timeless appeal and productive nature. Roosters are red and black, adding a touch of vibrancy to any backyard. The hens, equally attractive with their rich tones, are renowned for their egg-laying capabilities. Their eggs are particularly notable—large, dark brown, often with beautiful speckling that sets them apart from other breeds.
Beyond their beauty, Welsummers are recognized for their friendly temperament. They are active birds that enjoy foraging but remain calm and approachable, making them ideal for families or small-scale poultry keepers.
